Review of the Jord 'Dover Ebony and Rosewood' wooden watch

When it comes to watches, Jord is setting itself apart from the crowd by creating unique timepieces made from sustainable resources: Wood. Despite the company's relatively young heritage, since Jord launched back in 2013 it has been producing fashionable watches that make great gifts for men and women. Jord sent Examiner one of its new Dover Ebony and Rosewoodwooden watches, and we've spent the past month getting intimate with it.

One of the first things you'll notice about the Jord Dover series is that these wooden watches are automatic. Most companies which produce wooden watches tend to use quartz movements, and while Jord also offers an extensive selection of high quality quartz watches to choose from it's the Automatic Seagull TY2807 movement in the Dover series that helps set them apart as truly unique watches.

Looking through the sapphire crystal glass face of the Jord Dover Ebony and Rosewood watch you can clearly see the red accented black minute and hour hands which compliment the black of the Eboy wood and reddish-brown of the Rosewood. At just 41 mm wide and 12 thick with 49 mm lug ends, the Jord Dover Ebony and Rosewood watch is small and light. Turning the watch around, you can see blue screws and decorative engravings through the rear sapphire crystal glass. One of the biggest advantages of wearing a wooden watch, aside from its distinct look, is that our arm didn't tire from wearing the Jord Dover Ebony and Rosewood watch all day long like it does when wearing other heavier steel timepieces. The 202 mm long band has removable links and is 24 mm thick with a deployment buckle with push buttons that quickly release the watch from your wrist at the end of the day.

The Seagull TY2807 movement features 21 jewels and operates at 21,600 BPH (beats per hour) with an accuracy of +/- 3 seconds a day. Thanks to the combination of an excellent self-winding drive system and the 36 hour power reserve we didn't find ourselves having to unscrew the black metal crown with a "J" etched onto it to wind this timepiece when wearing it daily. We did, however, need to wind the Jord Dover series watch when alternating every other day with other watches. Because the Jord Dover series watches doesn't feature a date complication it wasn't a hassle to reset the time when the watch's power reserve ran out from a couple days of not wearing it like some other watches can be. While some may enjoy date complications we found its absence here a boon as we wouldn't feel obligated to keep the Dover series watches in a winding machine, instead we'd be able to use that savings to purchase another watch.

Although the Jord Dover series watches feature a screw-down crown and are water resistant to 3 atmospheres (30 meters or 100 feet) we wouldn't recommend choosing to wear it while washing your hands. Wood is porous, so hot soapy water might have a chance of damaging the watch's exterior. It's excellent to know that the Jord Dover series will be fine if you're caught in the middle of a rainstorm, but we wouldn't advise choosing to wear it when you know ahead of time that it's going to be a rainy day.

The Jord Dover series delivers the perfect fusion between metal and wood with its see-through skeleton automatic movement and gorgeous Rosewood and Ebony exterior. After wearing it for over a month, the Jord Dover Ebony and Rosewood watch has quickly become our favorite wooden timepiece - and we've seen quite a few. The Dover series is available in several additional styles: Koa and Blackwood, Zebrawood and Dark Sandalwood, and Ebony and Copper. If you're searching for high quality birthday gifts or Father's Day gifts, then the Jord Dover series delivers a remarkable bang for your buck at just $295. When you consider the MSRP of other company's automatic watches, the Jord Dover series beats its competitors not only in price but in style too.
