Anyone who owns three or more watches can tell you that having to wind and set the time every time you go to put on an automatic watch that they've neglected to wear for more than a couple of days can be a pain.
That's especially true if the timepiece in question has a date complication or other settings that must be readjusted every time the power reserve runs out. A watch winder allows you to keep your automatic watch from stopping, allowing you to go more than just a couple days without wearing it. After a month of using it, our verdict is in: It's a must have accessory for every automatic watch wearer.
Wolf produces a wide variety of watch winders to choose from, and the Cub line makes a great entry point for a watch collector who wants a reliable and inexpensive way to keep their watches wound. Available in a multitude fashions to fit your personal style or room's decor, aside from the Cub collection's exterior aesthetics there's only one real main difference between the product line up: The Wolf Cub winder and the Wolf Cub watch winder with cover have a $36 price difference between the two models ($179 without the cover and $215 with it). The cover serves two real main purposes: Keeping dust out and protecting your watch. It doesn't matter if your watch was only a few hundred dollars or several thousand, keeping the face of your timepiece safe from scratches (especially if it was given to you as a gift) makes choosing the Wolf Cub winder with glass cover a smart choice, especially if you plan to store it out in the open versus say, in a closet where the cover may not be as important.
Using the Wolf cub winder is incredibly simple. First make sure that the unit is off by flicking the switch on the back, then remove the watch cuff by pulling it directly out of the Wolf Cub winder. Close the clasp on your timepiece, then squeeze the watch cuff so that you can insert your watch onto it. Release the watch cuff, and the interior springs will make sure that your watch is snug and won't move on it. You can fit watches with with up to a 55 mm case on the watch cuff. After the face of your watch is centered on the front, push the watch cuff back into the Wolf Cub watch winder. You'll feel and hear an audible click as the watch cuff secures to the winder. Close the cover, and turn the power switch back on. There will be a 10 second start delay, and then you'll see your watch start to slowly spin.
The Wolf Cub winder will complete 900 turns per day with its patented bi-directional rotation program. The Wolf Cub winder won't actually turn constantly all day long. Instead, the Wolf Cub winder will spin on and off throughout the day to simulate actual use on your wrist. The device will also "sleep." While modern automatic watches cannot be over-wound, the intermittent pauses and sleep phases of the Wolf Cub winder will help prevent this from occurring on older timepieces. There's a small LED light on the front that blinks so that you know the unit is turned on, even if it isn't spinning.
While the Wolf Cub winder runs on AC power, there's also an option for you to use AA batteries. That's handy if there's no power plug near where you want to store it or if you want to take the unit with you while traveling. Wolf points out that lithium batteries will last twice as long as alkaline batteries in the unit, and if this is the route you take we'd definitely recommend rechargeable lithium batteries. Wolf includes a set of universal adapters which snap onto the end of the power plug so that you can take the Wolf Cub winder just about anywhere across the globe. Wolf also provides a soft storage bag that'll fit the unit, cord, and all adapters.
An important thing we should note about the Wolf Cub winder line is that it's easily expandable. Each unit comes with a small power connector so that you only need one power cord to run them. Additionally, Wolf offers a stackable Cubby which you can slot three Cub winders into so that it has the appearance of one larger unit. This system allows you to scale over time as your watch collection grows.
