Review of the May 2016 Menascope box

Menascope is a new monthly subscription service providing high-quality men's grooming and lifestyle products. All of the items featured in each month's Menascope box are made in the USA from both small local and nationwide businesses.
Every month Menascope subscribers can look forward to receiving between four to six handcrafted grooming related items such as "soaps, lotions, candles, beard care kits, etc." According to Menascope box's founder Andrew Pierre, the idea for Menascope box popped into his head when he couldn't easily find a wedding gift for a friend. "Why give just one present, when you can give a gift that keeps giving all year long? Your loved one will have something to look forward to every month."

Pierre sent Examiner.com an advance review unit ahead of the Menascope box launch of May 2016. Our Menascope box arrived via USPS priority mail, in a small cardboard box. Yet despite its size, the Menascope box was packed with a nice assortment of awesome products. Let's take a look at what was inside:
Botanical Bars Shea Butter Mini Soap - $1.99 from Botanicalbars.com.
Big White Yeti Sexy Time Candle - $10.00 from Etsy.com.
Oliver's Shave Cream - $11.00 from Shavewitholivers.com.
Man or Beast Sandalwood Mint Beard Oil - $14.99 from Themanorbeast.com.

Call us crazy, but we're used to using cheap Ivory Soap. It's probably why our hands are always so dry and we need to use hand moisturizer. Not only does the Botanical Bars Shea Butter Mini Soap smell great, it also helps keep the skin on your hands healthy. We just wish the bar was bigger because there's no way it'll last the whole month.

This writer has never purchased candles, outside of the use of topping a birthday cake. It's one of those things that many guys just don't think of doing; however, it made an excellent way to set the mood when our girlfriend arrived. The sweet vanilla fragrance wasn't overpowering like some of the Yankee Candles we've had the unpleasant experience of smelling.

Made out of organic and natural ingredients, Oliver's Shave Cream was a luxurious upgrade from typical shaving cream that's sprayed from a can. Oliver's Shave Cream boasts pure sandalwood, comfrey, calendula, and aloe to "soothe irritations, while a mix of oat, gotu kola, green tea and vitamin E help to keep skin your skin smooth and toned."

We haven't actually used the Man or Beast Sandalwood Mint Beard Oil yet, as this author typically keeps his face clean shaven, so we can't speak to just how soft it'll keep your facial hair. According the the manufacturer's website though, it'll "fight the itchy dry feeling, and stimulate beard growth." You can also use the Man or Beast Sandalwood Mint Beard Oil as part of your pre-shave regiment "to fight irritation."

We were highly satisfied with the products in the May 2016 Menascope Box. Generally speaking when it comes to monthly box subscriptions you're trading away the choice of what you receive to an extra value of savings. This Menascope box featured $38 of product for $35.95. That doesn't include the $6 for shipping in the USA ($8 in Canada and $16 internationally), which raises the price to $41.95. We should note that when we checked the price of shipping the Big White Yeti Sexy Time Candle from Etsy.com by itself it was $6.20. When you consider that in order to purchase all of the products above you'd have to spend $15 or more on shipping depending where you live, the $6 shipping doesn't look as bad.

We think that the Menascope box is great for discovering products which we would've never come across otherwise. One prime example is the Big White Yeti Sexy Time Candle, which is only carried in a few niche stores in Wisconsin. Additionally, Oliver's Shave Cream which can only be purchased online. And let's be honest: How many guys are looking through Etsy listings for handmade soap? Not only can we take pride in supporting local American businesses, but the Menascope service helps bring these small brands making hand-crafted quality products to the general public.
